Last Thursday, I got bitten by the sweet tooth – and of the more adventurous sort. Chocolate bars wouldn’t do so I dragged my brother along to Patisserie Caroline, located along M. Paterno in San Juan.
Entering Patisserie Caroline is like venturing into the front gate of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. The smell of freshly baked bread and pastries mingled with the fragrance of tea and coffee.
The counter featured scrumptious cake selections such as Mango Shortcake, Tunnel of Fudge and Leche Flan and Ube Cake.
We had the house blend iced tea (60Php)  which tasted refreshingly honey-sweet. We sampled the chocolate rum loaf (250Php per loaf) , one of the patisserie’s best-sellers.
Don’t let the normal, chocolatey appearance deceive you. It was  a scrumptious, decadent treat – moist chocolate with the richness of rum. I’m the type who gets umay quickly when it comes to sweets but I could have three to four pieces of the chocolate rum cake.
I was intrigued by their Calamansi Dacquoise (110Php  per slice/ 880Php for the 9-inch cake):
It was a delectable treat as I love the flavor of calamansi. Stacked between densely packed layers of cashew nuts, the calamansi flavored filling balanced out the sweetness of the cake. This is, without a doubt, my favorite from Patisserie Caroline’s.
Meanwhile my brother tried out the leche flan and the yema cake:
Patisserie Caroline revamped the chiffon cake for the Pinoy taste. The leche flan was pleasantly sweet – the perennial Filipino dessert/ comfort food. The yema cake, drizzled with cheese, was another yummy treat on buttery-soft chiffon.
We went to Patisserie Caroline’s primarily for the sweets but after her sugar fest, my brother and I craved for something salty or spicy. I had the pasta con sarde and my brother tried the clubhouse sandwich:
I loved the Pasta Con Sarde – the Spanish Sardines added the kick that revamped the basil-and-olive-oil-based pasta. A perfect treat for vegetarians – even non-vegetarians such as myself enjoyed this tasty-but healthy dish.
My brother has quite the appetite and he loves his clubhouse sandwiches. Caroline’s clubhouse sandwich fulfilled both taste and serving requirements. Brother could not finish these sandwiches on his own and he generously have me one quarter. I liked how there was no scrimping on the cucumber and tomato 🙂
Overall, our Patisserie Caroline was a pleasant one. Alfie, the sister of Caroline, was very hands-on and very friendly. Caroline herself served up the yema cake. One feels that it is a homey, comfortable place run by family. Brother and I ended up taking out one chocolate rum loaf for Mom. It was beautifully packed in a red-and-gold box. Mom just loved it 🙂

Actually, I am on a diet in the sense that I’ve limited my intake of food (am not subscribing to any fad diet). But I do crave so I decided that if I cannot satisfy my tummy, might as well please the eye:

Sushi! I love drowning them in wasabi for that burn-in-your-nose sensation.

Kebabs! For that healthy, delicious taste.

Pasta is another winner and I prefer it doused in red sauce. With salmon, too.

Now, where would this list be without chocolate? I epsecially love truffles but it is absolutely lethal on the waistline.

I am a sucker for cheese and pizza is one of my favorite choices. Actually, I could pretty much devour some blue cheese with freshly baked baguettes. Another waistline hitter.


Blinis with smoked caviar and sour cream. A Russian appetizer which I love – a blend of sweet, salty and sour.

I’ve always wanted to try steak, cooked to a medium rare but my mother insists I eat only well done. Ugh. Someday, someday.

And I would finish these off with:

Coke with whiskey.

I feel like I just gained ten pounds writing this but it’s all worth it.
